COMPETITION WINNER 2024

"I was fortunate to attend ISMICS 2025 in Istanbul, supported by BISMICS, where I had the opportunity to present my winning BISMICS video, “ASD Closure via a Partial Lower Mini Sternotomy.” The conference brought together leading experts in minimally invasive and robotic cardiac surgery, and it was both a privilege and an inspiration to learn directly from pioneers in the field, including the renowned Mr Husam Balkhy, the current ISMICS President.

Panel discussions sparked engaging debates on contemporary approaches to mitral valve repair and coronary surgery, offering valuable insights into evolving surgical techniques. I particularly appreciated the chance to speak with UK surgeons about how they are integrating minimally invasive practices into their work, which deepened my understanding of the practical challenges and innovations within the NHS.

In addition to the academic content, I was able to explore hands-on learning through the da Vinci simulation robots provided by Intuitive, enhancing my familiarity with robotic systems in a practical, interactive setting.

Beyond the lectures and simulation labs, the conference provided a vibrant environment to reconnect with friends and fellow students from across the globe, supporting one another’s presentations and sharing our passion for cardiothoracic surgery. Exploring the beautiful city of Istanbul added a cultural dimension to the experience, making it both academically enriching and personally memorable.

Attending ISMICS has been incredibly beneficial for my education and career development, and I am sincerely grateful to BISMICS for making this experience possible." - Natasha Bocchetta
